Florence Airport could gain a terminal with a vineyard on the roof

Amerigo Vespucci Airport, in Florence, Tuscany region, Italy, could gain a new international terminal with a 7.7 hectare vineyard on the roof. The expectation is that the 50,000 m² area will receive 5.9 million passengers per year.

The project, designed by the architectural firm Rafael Viñoly Architects, includes 38 rows of vines, which will provide thermal insulation, as well as 1.2 meter wide skylights, which will allow natural light to enter. The green roof will help maintain a more stable internal temperature, which tends to reduce energy consumption for air conditioning.

According to the office, the proposal is to create "a landmark for the city's sustainable future, but also a symbol of the traditions, history and innovative spirit that continue to drive the Italian economy in the 21st century".

The vines will be cultivated and harvested by winegrowers in the region and the wine will be produced and aged on site, in specialized cellars.

The intervention plan also includes the reorientation of the airport's runway, which limits the operation of modern aircraft due to it being short and close to the hills.
