Flex-fuel cars make up 66% of the fleet and maintain dominance in SP
Bul-fuel engines continue to make up the vast majority of the car fleet in the state of São Paulo. According to data from Detran-SP, of the total of just over 15 million active cars in the state, more than 10 million are flex fuel - capable of running on gasoline, ethanol or a mixture of both - and represent 66.48% of all cars that still run on the streets and highways of SP.
On the other hand, vehicles powered strictly by gasoline still hold a considerable share and occupy the second position in the state, with a 30% presence, that is, around 4.5 million units.
This percentage is supported, in part, by the strong growth in the hybrid car segment, which, for the most part, only runs on gasoline, but should change considerably, as flex hybrid vehicles are starting to arrive, including with incentives from international automakers and the federal government.
At the other end, vehicles powered purely by ethanol total just 686,901 units, which represents just 4.53% of the fleet. Despite the timid index, the market is preparing for a possible resumption of the niche for the exclusive use of biofuel, driven by energy efficiency incentives.
A recent example of this movement is the announcement of the arrival of the Chevrolet Onix Eco, a version developed by the American company to run only on ethanol fuel.
When analyzing the two-wheel segment, the fuel division scenario changes completely. Among the almost 6 million motorcycles and scooters that travel in the state of São Paulo, flex technology loses its prominence:

The leading role of the energy transition in the national automotive market could cause the scenario to change significantly in the coming years. With the insertion of hybrid and electric cars and the possible increase in the supply of cars powered exclusively by ethanol (one of the most studied resources to help solve the emissions problem in Brazil), together with state incentives and the arrival of innovative foreign technologies, especially from the East, the state fleet should acquire another characteristic in the near future.
