Five die in mine in China after tragedy in Shanxi that killed 82

A mine shaft collapse during an illegal mining operation in southwest China's Yunnan province killed five people and injured one, state media reported, days after the country's deadliest mining accident since 2009 that left at least 82 people dead.

The incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday in Yunnan's Huize county, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing local officials. The report did not specify which mineral was being extracted.

Of six people rescued from the scene and taken to hospital, only one survived, according to the Xinhua agency, and his condition is stable.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident, which followed a fatal gas explosion on May 22 at a coal mine in the northern province of Shanxi. In addition to the 82 people killed, two are still missing and 128 were injured.

Xinhua news agency previously reported that carbon monoxide levels "exceeded limits" at the mine.

This was China's worst mine disaster in 17 years since a gas explosion in Heilongjiang province killed 108 people.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on authorities to spare no effort in resolving the crisis, as well as ordering a full investigation into the cause of the accident and strict accountability.

Premier Li Qiang reiterated the instructions, calling for accurate disclosure of information and strict accountability.
