First plasma dress in history is created by Iris Van Herpen
Paris Haute Couture week began this Monday (6) and Iris Van Harper made history by modeling a plasma dress, called "Helix Nebula".
In physics, plasma is considered the fourth physical state of matter, an ionized gas, matter without shape or volume, but highly energized and reacts to environmental conditions. As NASA explains, plasma is what makes up 99.9% of the universe, being the material that forms the Sun and other stars, despite being rare on Earth.
For an ionized gas to be composed of the dress, the piece was composed of two structural shapes suspended around the silhouette, which Iris explains was made with hand-blown glass and filled with plasma, so that it reacted to human touch. "When the dress is worn, the body becomes a conductor of the plasma's electric field, altering it and interacting with it. As a result, the dress temporarily incorporates the body into its electromagnetic system. Body and dress become one", described the designer on his social networks.
The base of the dress is made of tulle - to which plasma glass has been attached - and the length is filled with structures that resemble bubbles, with transparent cutouts and a fluid length.
The collection also showcased the piece "Fractal Universe", which required a particle accelerator operated in extreme conditions, with temperatures at -100°C. With electrically charged particles, what is observed is the formation of rays that look like electrical discharges. "This transformed the dress into a reservoir of metastable energy, containing billions of trapped electrons that generate an intense electric field maintained within its structure."
The dress consisted of a black veil the length of the model's body, with glittering embroidery on the hem, and a hat that resembled a black bird's wing with the same embroidery. "The fine details belonged not to the hand of the creator, but to lightning, exploring the thresholds between body, matter and energy," continued the designer.
Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch designer known for combining haute couture and technology, and created her fashion house in 2007. For "Helix Nebula" she combined NASA's research into the behavior of stars and their vibrations, a phenomenon that is similar to earthquakes on their surface, and has the capacity to generate variations in energy in space. In line with the studies, the designer called the collection "Sonic Starquakes" - 'starquakes' being the name of these seismic shocks from the stars.
