Fire hits two floors of school with 300 students in Japan

An elementary school in northern Tokyo was evacuated this Friday (19) after a fire broke out in the music room on the fourth floor, Japanese media reported.

Several students suffered smoke inhalation injuries, public broadcaster NHK reported.

When the fire broke out, there were about 300 students and staff at Takinogawa Daisan Elementary School, the broadcaster reported.

Aerial footage released by local broadcasters showed firefighters entering through damaged windows on the school's third and fourth floors.

A video recorded by an eyewitness shows several children waiting for rescue on a narrow ledge outside a classroom window as thick black smoke billows from behind them.
