FIFA allocates R$5 million to earthquake victims in Venezuela

FIFA announced that it will allocate US$1 million, around R$5 million, to help victims of the earthquakes that hit Venezuela at the end of June. The amount will be used to reinforce humanitarian assistance actions, support the emergency response and contribute to the recovery of communities affected by the tragedy.

The resources will be transferred through the FIFA Foundation Humanitarian Fund, a mechanism created by the entity to finance emergency actions in situations of natural disasters and other humanitarian crises.

According to the most recent official bulletin released by the Venezuelan government, the death toll reached 3,889 following the earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, recorded on June 24. In addition to the fatal victims, almost 17,000 people were injured and another 17,907 lost their homes.

In a statement, FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the football community is mobilized to support the Venezuelan population in this time of crisis.

"The people of Venezuela have the full solidarity of the global family in these difficult times. Football has a unique ability to unite people and convey hope, especially in times of crisis. Through the FIFA Foundation, we are proud to stand alongside the Venezuelan people and support humanitarian organizations and local partners who work tirelessly to bring urgent aid to those who need it most," he declared.

Executive head of the FIFA Foundation, Mauricio Macri also highlighted the social role of sport in the face of the calamity. According to the former president of Argentina, the humanitarian fund reaffirms the entity's commitment to collaborating with organizations that work on the front lines of caring for victims and in the reconstruction of affected areas.

FIFA also informed that the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) participates in support actions in the country. According to the entity, the federation works in partnership with local organizations to expand the reach of humanitarian aid and reinforce the role of football both in the immediate response to the emergency and in the recovery process of affected communities.
