Fiat Toro is up to R$5,000 more expensive and gets a hybrid version to take on Volkswagen and BYD

Fiat announced, this Friday (29), the 2027 line of the Toro pickup truck. Prices vary between R$167,490 and R$238,490. The versions have become more equipped and some now offer a hybrid system, with the promise of up to 12% fuel savings.
First of all, it is important to explain that it is a mild hybrid system, called MHEV, which works with 48 volts. In this type of technology, the electric motor does not move the wheels and the high voltage battery is small, much smaller than that of traditional hybrid cars. Therefore, the gain in fuel consumption is more discreet.
Even so, the T270 engine used in the hybrid versions showed a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 12.3%:
With ethanol, urban consumption went from 6.5 km/l to 7.3 km/l, an improvement of 12.3%;
With gasoline, the number rose from 9.4 km/l to 10.5 km/l, a gain of 11.7%.
It is worth highlighting that this savings only appears in urban use. On the road, the numbers were slightly worse:
With ethanol, road consumption fell from 7.8 km/l to 7.6 km/l, a worsening of 2.5%;
With gasoline, it went from 10.8 km/l to 10.7 km/l, a drop of 0.9%.
Even with the improvement in the Fiat Toro's consumption, which benefits those who use the pickup mainly in the city, the technical sheet remains the same as from last year's model. The hybrid version features the T270 engine, with 176 hp of power and 27.5 kgfm of torque, the same numbers as the non-electrified version.
This is the same engine used in the hybrid Jeep Renegade, but in the SUV, fuel economy was lower, at 9%. It is worth remembering that, despite sharing the mechanical set, each vehicle has its own adjustments.
Unlike the Renegade, Toro has a diesel version, which remains unchanged and, in this case, without any type of hybrid system. It has slightly greater power, with 200 hp, compared to the flex version, but stands out mainly for its torque, which is 66% higher and reaches 45.8 kgfm.

The arrival of the new Toro hybrid is a response to the advancement of two important brands, now looking at the pickup truck segment. One of them is the Volkswagen Tukan.

The model was presented camouflaged on the same day as the announcement of the Brazilian team's lineup for the 2026 World Cup. It has a similar size to the Toro, being above the size of the Volkswagen Saveiro, which occupies a segment where it competes directly with the Fiat Strada - simpler and smaller than the Toro.
Technical details are not yet available. were fully disclosed, but Volkswagen confirmed that the Tukan will have a hybrid option. The technology will be very similar to that of the electrified Toro, based on a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
In practice, this means that, as with the Toro, the Tukan will not have an electric motor responsible for moving the wheels.
Volkswagen has not yet set the launch date for the Tukan, but the pickup truck is unlikely to reach the Brazilian market in 2026.

Another name that Fiat follows closely is BYD Mako. Just like the Tukan, this pickup's proposal is to compete for space with Toro, but, unlike its Volkswagen rival, it is promised to be launched later this year.
Even with its launch promised soon, little is still known about the Mako, including its appearance. The only display of the model took place in Ribeirão Preto (SP), using a mold that, according to BYD itself, may still undergo changes before its official debut.
According to Victor François, communications supervisor at BYD, the price of the Mako will be below the R$ 344,990 charged by the BYD Shark, currently the only pickup truck from the Chinese brand on sale in Brazil.
