Federal Government studies demolition of bridge in SP after death in rope jump

The Federal Government is studying the demolition of the Esqueleto bridge, located in Limeira, in the interior of São Paulo, where the young Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died, this Saturday (13), after being thrown without a rope during the practice of "rope jumping".

According to the MGI (Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services), two meetings were held in the bridge region, this Monday (15), where the federal and municipal governments discussed solutions together and blocking access to the site.

The meeting was represented by the Federal Government through the SPU (Secretariat of Patrimony of the Union) and the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), and by the municipal authorities with the mayor of Cordeirópolis, Cristina Saad, and the mayor of Limeira, Murilo Felix, and their teams.

During the meeting, both the mayor of Cordeirópolis and the mayor of Limeira stated that there are containment actions that are already being taken by the municipalities to block access to the bridge. The two also spoke out in favor of demolition.

The City of Cordeirópolis and the SPU agreed to reinforce actions to contain access to the bridge, and the City of Limeira committed to reopening a ditch that prevented access to the site, but was later closed, without the agency's knowledge.

SPU-SP also committed to installing physical barriers, in addition to warning signs, to inform that the bridge is owned by the Union and entry is prohibited.

In addition, SPU reported that discussions with local governments will continue to find a definitive solution for the bridge, which could include demolition.

The bridge was officially transferred to the Patrimony of the Union under the management of the Secretariat in May, and, according to the SPU, sporting activities were not authorized at the site.

Previously, Limeira City Hall had informed that it would sue the Federal Government, alleging omission, as they would be exclusively responsible for monitoring, maintaining and controlling access to the Bridge. The municipal administration says that, since 2025, it had already sent letters to the responsible bodies demanding security measures.

After Maria Eduarda fell, people at the scene performed CPR until the arrival of the SAMU team, but the death was confirmed at the scene due to polytrauma. To date, three company employees have been arrested.

According to the incident report, when police officers arrived at the scene, they found two individuals close to the victim and questioned what had happened. When one of the police officers moved away to provide rescue support, the individuals attempted to flee towards a vegetation area. Because of this, support was requested from other vehicles and the PM aircraft to locate the men.

The Civil Police understood that the elements indicate that those investigated took the risk of resulting in death, and in addition to the lack of security, the location has a history of serious incidents, including other deaths.

For this reason, the three were arrested for murder with possible intent. The custody hearing for the suspects was held this Sunday morning (14) and the São Paulo Court converted the detention into preventive detention.
