'Father of Brexit' resigns from his position in the UK Parliament

Nigel Farage, far-right politician and leader of the Reform UK party, resigned this Tuesday (7) from his position in the United Kingdom Parliament amid an investigation into his financial life.

In a video statement, Farage criticized what he called an invasion by the press into his family life and stated that the political establishment was doing do everything to harm your party. He said he did nothing wrong, but was resigning to "let the people decide" whether he should represent them.
"I did nothing, I broke absolutely no laws. (...) The people should be the judge of my actions," said the politician.
Farage has been in the spotlight in the United Kingdom in recent months after his finances were investigated by British authorities. According to the indictment, he failed to declare a donation of five million pounds (about R$34.5 million) from a cryptocurrency investor during his campaign, in addition to donations from an ally who was arrested in the US for fraud in 2017.

Despite the resignation, Farage said he will run again for his position, which represents the electoral zone of Clacton, in southeastern England, in a bipartisan election for the seat.
"This will be a by-election between the people and the establishment. (...) I will fight to win. I will fight to continue the political revolution that Reform started", said Farage.
Farage gained notoriety in British politics by leading the Brexit movement, which removed the United Kingdom from the European Union via popular referendum in 2016 - the exit itself took place in 2020. He was elected parliamentarian in 2024 after losing seven elections.
