Father arrested after using ChatGPT to plan his own son's death in ES

A 36-year-old farmer was arrested in São Gabriel da Palha, in the northeast of Espírito Santo, after being discovered by the FBI after using ChatGPT to plan the murder of his own son and, thus, avoid paying child support to his ex-partner, the child's mother.

The suspect was captured on June 19, one day before the planned date for him to carry out the attack against a minor. His name has not been released by authorities.

The information reached the police on June 16, after information shared by the MJSP (Ministry of Justice and Public Security) and North American authorities, including the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), to the Espírito Santo Police, which indicated a concrete risk to the integrity of the boy, who was just 8 years old.

According to investigations, the suspect used the tool to detail plans involving the use of weapons, poison and even hiring a gunman to murder his son. In addition to the threats against his family, he also expressed his intention to carry out mass attacks on schools and churches.

The company responsible for the platform sent information to the FBI that the individual was carrying out constant research related to the intention of killing his own son. The FBI, in turn, shared this data with the Ministry of Justice's CyberLab, which passed the case on to the Civil Police. We have been working with cyber investigations for eight years and this integration between national and international institutions has been fundamental to the success of several operations, due to this mutual support.

Also according to the delegate, in one of the conversations the person under investigation claimed to already have a gun, a rope and cyanide to claim as many victims as possible in the attacks.

The man was approached while leaving work. The cell phone and other belongings found with him were seized and sent to the Scientific Police for examination.

During his testimony, the suspect did not confess to the crimes and stated that he had no intention of killing his son. Despite the denial, according to the Civil Police, the conversations held with the artificial intelligence tool indicated the planning of the attacks.

"He confirmed that he carried out the research, but denied the intention of putting the acts into practice. Now we will compare the data obtained in the conversations with the content extracted from the seized cell phone. The objective is to verify whether there was any effective action to hire third parties or to carry out the crimes mentioned", explained the delegate.

The suspect was initially framed for the purposes of representation for search and seizure and preventive detention, for the crimes of threat and incitement to crime. The Civil Police informed that, after the investigation is completed, they will define what the charges will be.
