Family denounces racism against teenager during game at E.C. Pinheiros

A 15-year-old athlete was the victim of racial abuse during a youth basketball game that took place last Thursday (25), inside Esporte Clube Pinheiros, one of the largest multi-sport clubs in Latin America, located in the west zone of São Paulo.

According to the police report registered by the teenager's family, after scoring a basket against the opposing team, he was called a "monkey" by another player, also 15 years old.

In a statement to the police, the victim reported that he was encouraged by other friends to report the incident to the coach, who decided to stop the match.

Following what happened, the teenager's family called the police. The two players involved and the basketball coach were taken to the police station to provide clarification.

On the other hand, the coach reported that he witnessed the entire discussion between the players and that there was a "natural provocation" of the game. According to him, there was no racial offense.

The case was registered as an infraction similar to the crime of racial insult. The minors were released in the presence of their guardians.

When contacted, Esporte Clube Pinheiros informed that it "reserves the right not to discuss the case" as it concerns minors. The association also said that it "vehemently repudiates any and all forms of prejudice."

In respect for the preservation of the parties involved, especially as the episode involves the participation of minors, Esporte Clube Pinheiros reserves the right not to discuss the case. It clarifies, however, that it is closely monitoring progress and that it will await the investigation by the competent authorities, adopting the measures that prove appropriate.
