Families of the missing protest in Mexico amid the opening of the World Cup

Relatives of missing people and their supporters protested in Mexico City this Thursday (11), trying to march towards a stadium that will host World Cup events. Its progress was impeded by the police, who blocked access with heavy vehicles.

Security forces positioned trucks and barricades around the site, preventing protesters from advancing. Some protesters climbed onto vehicles, while others gathered at the barricades holding photographs of their missing family members.

A woman broke down in tears after being denied passage.

According to Amnesty International, there are 134,460 people missing in Mexico as of May 25, 2026.

Participants said authorities deployed a strong police contingent to restrict their movements, describing the response as repressive.

The demonstration took place amid tight security in the capital, on the eve of the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
