Failure of students in high school drops 62% in three years, says MEC

Data released this Friday (26) by the MEC (Ministry of Education) indicates that student failure rates in high school fell to 62% in three years.

The indicators are part of the 2nd stage of the 2025 School Census, carried out in partnership with Inep (National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira).

Between 2022 and 2025, school dropout rates decreased by 61% and the age-grade distortion, an indicator that measures academic delay, was reduced by 28%.

In the same period, the high school pass rate rose 11%.

"The results demonstrate that more students are managing to stay in school, advance in grade and complete their studies in a timely manner", says the Minister of Education, Leonardo Barchini.

According to the ministry, Enem recorded a 46% increase in registrations made by public school graduates, from 2022 to 2025.

From the 2026 edition onwards, third-grade high school students from the country's public network will be automatically enrolled in the test.

Another fact is that, from 2022 to 2025, the rate of non-return of young people aged 15 to 17 to school fell by 28%.

The ministry attributes initiatives such as Pé-de-Meia, high school savings, to the improvement in rates. The program offers financial incentives for students who attend classes, pass the year, complete basic education and take the Enem.

"The most vulnerable young people need to have the same chances of completing their studies as any other student. Nest Egg is not just an income transfer. It is an educational policy to improve student retention and performance", says Leonardo Barchini.
