Extreme heat puts Portugal x Croatia fans on alert
Fans who will watch the match between Portugal and Croatia in the round of 16 of the World Cup, this Thursday (2), in Toronto, were advised by local authorities to stay hydrated and reduce their consumption of alcoholic beverages given the forecast of extreme heat.
The alert was issued after the agency "Environment Canada" predicted temperatures above 35°C. With high humidity, the thermal sensation can reach 40°C, according to the medical director of Toronto Public Health, Michelle Murti.
"Don't wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. Stay hydrated throughout the day and try to moderate your alcohol consumption, which can contribute to dehydration," Murti told Reuters.
Health authorities are also monitoring the possibility of storms during the day, which could lead to the cancellation of some public areas organized for the broadcast of the match.
The Toronto Stadium, the smallest stadium used in the 2026 World Cup, will host its last game in the tournament this Thursday. The city organized fan fests and social areas to follow the matches throughout the competition.

Meanwhile, different regions of Canada face extreme weather conditions on the eve of the national Canada Day holiday, celebrated this Wednesday (1st). The country has recorded episodes ranging from floods to heat waves.
On Tuesday (30), fans gathered at Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto's main square, sought to alleviate the high temperatures at misting stations installed by city hall.
"I'm here to watch the game. It's so hot outside and I can't even imagine how the players are feeling. I think I'll leave early because it's so hot," said Toronto resident Megan Rennie.
Colombian Laura Albarez, who is visiting the city, said she intended to return to the hotel to rest.
"I'm glad there's drinking water available. Maybe I'll come back later because it's really hot," he said.
