Explosions are heard in Kiev after Zelensky warns of Russian attack

A series of loud explosions were heard in Kiev in the early hours of Thursday (2), local time, according to CNN journalists in the region.

Local authorities say a residential building was destroyed and a multi-story residential building is on fire. Some residents are taking shelter in subway stations.

The explosions occurred just hours after a warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that intelligence indicated Russia was planning a "massive" nighttime attack.

"Today, I ask our people in Ukraine to be especially careful, stay safe and protect your families and children, be sure to seek shelter and heed warnings of air strikes in Ukraine," Zelensky posted on X on Wednesday (1).

"We know that Putin has been preparing a massive attack against Ukraine for some time. That is exactly the threat we face tonight," he concluded.

Kiev's mayor reported that Ukraine was working to repel Russian drone and ballistic missile attacks.
