An expedition of cyclists will travel through the scenarios that inspired the writer Guimarães Rosa
An expedition of cyclists will travel through the scenarios that inspired the Minas Gerais native Guimarães Rosa to write "Grande Sertão: Veredas", one of the main works of Brazilian literature.
Guimarães' homeland dawned with the buzz of bicycles.
"We exchanged the horse for the bicycle, the bicycle. We remember, relive his points, right", says Sanja Mara Bastos Simões Godinho, housewife.
The start was at Portal do Grande Sertão, in Cordisburgo, in the interior of Minas. The viola and the horn wished you a good trip.
It will be 40 days. 1.8 thousand km cycling. Minutes after leaving, the asphalt gave way to the dust of dirt roads.
The delegation's first stop is at a farm, where Guimarães Rosa stayed during the trip that inspired the book: Grande Sertão - Veredas. The house - 140 years old - keeps the history of the expedition that changed the way we look at this region.
"At the time, the owner's daughter was feeling ill and he introduced himself as a doctor, and then the people were embarrassed and took him into the house, because until then, as the tres marias were being built, on the other farms people thought he was a government spy.. So, he slept with the cowboys. This was the only farm, in fact, in this room, in this bed, that he slept inside a farm, inside a house", says André Luís Dutra Ferreira, museologist.
Guimarães Rosa crossed this hinterland on horseback, writing down words, stories and people's way of living. And what he saw and experienced there became one of the greatest works of our literature.
Now, the expedition will map this path. And the idea is to transform the route into a digital guide so that other people can retrace the route in the future.
"I hope to pass through some places that will remind me of everything that happened in that book. Let's see if I can see something of what Rosa saw too", comments Aníbal Batista - engineer.
In the landscape, scenes that seem to have come out of the pages of the book. Hidden paths, wide rivers opening paths, immense mountains shaped by the wind and time.
In the Grande Sertão Veredas National Park, the buriti "fans" in the wind - as Guimarães Rosa wrote. Espírito Santo, forestry engineer.
Guimarães Rosa wrote: "What life wants from us is courage." And on this journey, 70 years after the book, there are still many people willing to listen to the sertão. And perhaps that is the biggest secret of this trip.
"We are always meeting friends, finding stories... finding landscapes. It's a path. The paths are there, as Rosa says. The Sertão is the size of the world. Let's do it, let's cycle, let's go into the hinterland", says José Osvaldo dos Santos, retired.
