Even with the water crisis, Sanepar rules out the possibility of rotation

Despite the water scarcity scenario that led the government of Paraná to declare an emergency in part of the state, Sanepar is currently ruling out the need to adopt rotational water supply.

In an interview with CNN, the company's president, Wilson Bley, stated that the company already has a contingency plan to face possible supply problems, but believes that the advance of the El Niño phenomenon should bring significant volumes of rain to the state in the coming months.

At the beginning of May, Sanepar declared a water emergency and prohibited the use of treated water for activities considered non-essential. According to the company, 69% of the monitored reservoirs operate outside of conditions considered normal and, of this total, around 17% are in a drought.

The decree provides for a series of measures to preserve water resources, including the possibility of adopting supply rotation. Despite this, the company's assessment is that the climate scenario expected for the coming months should reduce pressure on water collection and storage systems.

The last time Paraná went through a rotation period, the situation lasted for almost two years. Between March 2020 and January 2022, Curitiba and municipalities in the Metropolitan Region experienced one of the longest relationships in the state's recent history, amid the worst drought recorded in almost a century.

According to meteorological projections, El Niño has formed again and could have significant intensity in the coming months, increasing the occurrence of rain in part of the southern region of the country. Sanepar's expectation is that this scenario will contribute to the gradual recovery of reservoirs and eliminate the risk of more restrictive supply measures.
