European Union plans to tax aluminum scrap exports, says newspaper

According to the Financial Times, the European Union is considering imposing a tax on the export of aluminum scrap. The measure seeks to prevent the departure of this valuable metal to the United States and Asian countries.
The report in the British newspaper says that, according to two people familiar with the matter, the plan foresees the charging of a 15% tax on the export of the material.

This will be the first time that charges will be applied to goods leaving the economic bloc. The rates are expected to come into effect on September 9th. The proposal needs to be approved by a majority of European Union member states.
According to the report, the European Aluminum association, which represents producers, reported that exports of aluminum scrap from the European Union reached a record of 1.27 million tons in 2025, which represents an increase of around 50% since 2019. Most of the volume was destined for India and China.
