Europe celebrates agreement between the US and Iran, but warns about nuclear weapons

European leaders expressed support for the peace agreement announced between the United States and Iran this Sunday (14), but reinforced that Tehran cannot develop nuclear weapons.
The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy stated that they are ready to lift sanctions against Iran as part of the process of normalizing relations. The four countries also defended the urgent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for global oil trade.
Despite their support for the agreement, European leaders had reservations. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated that the United Kingdom maintains the position that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the Iranian regime needs to stop being a destabilizing factor in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, tension also marked the preparations for the G7 meeting. In Switzerland, protesters clashed with police during protests against the meeting of the group that brings together some of the largest economies in the world.
The summit begins this Monday (15), in Evian, France, a city close to the Swiss border. The conflict in the Middle East and the developments of the agreement between the United States and Iran should be among the main topics of discussion.
Announcement of the agreement
According to the mediators, the understanding announced this Sunday paves the way for negotiations of a permanent peace agreement and, consequently, for the end of the war.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council reported that it concluded a memorandum of understanding under the leadership of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
According to the Iranian state press, the document foresees the immediate end of clashes on all fronts, including Lebanon, in addition to the end of the naval blockade imposed by the United States on Iran.
The country's official news agency released what would be 14 points of the memorandum. The text, however, has not yet been officially published by either party.
In the United States, the White House presented the agreement as a victory for President Donald Trump. The Iranian government, on the other hand, treats the understanding as an achievement for the regime.
The announcement was received with caution by the international community.
The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, classified the agreement as a crucial step towards a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, one of the leaders involved in mediating the negotiations.
In a statement, Sharif said that the official signing ceremony of the agreement is scheduled for next Friday, at Switzerland. Until then, the mediators must hold a series of meetings to discuss the final details of the understanding.
Market reaction
The reaction also reached the markets. Oil futures contracts fell by around 4% after the announcement of the understanding between the two countries.
