Electrical discharge kills young man in park that hosted COP30 in PA

A young man died after suffering an electric shock on Wednesday night (8), in Parque da Cidade, in Belém, Pará. According to witnesses, the victim was at the skateboard park when he stepped on one of the power circuit boxes during the rain and ended up being electrocuted.

The Fire Department was called and provided first aid while still at the scene, but the young man did not survive. The identity of the victim has not been released.

The case occurred in Parque da Cidade, a space built to host part of the negotiations and debates of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), in November 2025.

In a statement, the State Secretariat for Culture (Secult) lamented the young man's death and expressed solidarity with the victim's family and friends.

The agency reported that the Fire Department was called immediately and carried out initial assistance in the park itself, but the victim died at the scene. The Military Police also monitored the incident.

Secult also informed that it contacted the competent authorities to investigate the circumstances of the accident and stated that it is providing all support to the young man's family.

As an immediate measure, Parque da Cidade will remain closed to visitors this Thursday morning (9).

CNN Brasil requested details from the Scientific Police and is awaiting feedback. The causes of the accident must be investigated to clarify how the electrical discharge occurred and whether there was any failure in the electrical structure of the space.
