Electric cars are expected to represent 30% of total sales in 2026

Sales of electric cars (EVs) continue to accelerate around the world. Proof of this is that the new Global EV Outlook report, from the International Energy Agency (IEA), points to 23 million electric cars sold by the end of 2026, equivalent to almost 30% of all cars sold on the planet.

In terms of production, last year, Chinese automakers supplied 60% of electric cars sold worldwide, while European and North American automakers were responsible for around 15% of global sales.

The research also highlights that EVs are increasingly cost-competitive in key markets, which could reinforce demand.

In the first quarter of 2026, global sales fell 8%, but several regions maintained strong growth. On the other hand, Latin America recorded growth of 75%.

By 2035, even without new policy announcements, the global fleet of EVs (excluding two- and three-wheelers) is expected to rise to 510 million, up from nearly 80 million today.

And how is Brazil?
For the partner of K.Lume Consultoria, Milad Kalume Neto, Brazil is still a time of discovery, launches and euphoria. "I understand that the euphoria will pass, as an electrified vehicle will be something common. What will change is the Brazilian's choice in relation to a brand that serves and respects Brazilians. That has capillarity, that has spare parts, that has quality service, and so on", highlights the expert.

Among electrified cars (hybrids and electrics combined) there was an increase of 26.2% between 2024 and 2025. The first four months of 2026 grew by practically 124% over the same period in 2025, showing a strong advance for this year.

Still in Kalume Neto's view, there will be an increase of up to 23 or 25% but then a drop year after year, as the standard in Brazil will still be hybrid vehicles.
