Eight students from a girls' boarding school in Kenya were detained this Friday (29), accused of causing the fire that killed 16 classmates in the city of Gilgil, police announced.
"Investigators continue to listen to statements and analyze all available evidence to reconstruct the course of events, establish all the circumstances of what happened and determine the motivation", explains the Kenyan police in a statement.
The fire happened last Thursday (28) and devastated the inmate's dormitory, leaving 79 people injured. The incident occurred at Utumishi Girls' School, which has more than 800 students.
Detectives were interrogating the students to determine whether any irregularities caused the fire.
Bernard Omwandho, a representative of the parents' association, urged calm from other parents.
"Most of the parents who are still here are those whose daughters are being interrogated," he said, adding that he hoped those questioned "could at least clarify or give us some clue as to what really happened." happened."
The school is located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of the capital, Nairobi. The government-owned secondary school is managed and sponsored by the Kenya Police Service. Many of the students are daughters of police officers.
