Egypt draws with Iran and confirms place in the World Cup knockout stages
Egypt and Iran drew 1-1 in the early hours of this Saturday (27), in Seattle, in the third and final round of Group G of the 2026 World Cup. Saber scored for the Egyptian team, while Rezaeian found the net for the Iranians.
With the result, the Egyptian team reached five points and guaranteed a place in the second phase by finishing second in Group G, behind Belgium, who took first place due to having a better goal difference.
The Iranian team, in turn, closed the group stage with three points and will have to wait for the end of the round to find out if they will advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
The match
Egypt opened the scoring just four minutes into the first half. Salah crossed into the box and Beiranvand came out to clear the ball with a punch, but the rebound fell to Saber, who finished under the goalkeeper's legs.
In the eighth minute, the referee awarded a penalty after Taremi was brought down in the area. During the kick, the attacker himself hit the corner, but Shobeir hit the side and made the save, frustrating Iran's chance to equalize the score.
The Iranian team did not give up after missing the penalty and reached a draw after 13 minutes. Mohammadi received the ball inside the area and finished for Shobeir to save. On the rebound, Rezaeian prevented the ball from passing through the baseline and sent it into the back of the net.
Overall, the first half was balanced and busy, with both teams creating good opportunities and alternating moments of pressure.
On the way back from the break, Egypt created the first good opportunity after just three minutes. Salah received the ball on the right, crossed into the area and found Trézéguet, who finished first, low, for Beiranvand to save.
The Egyptians continued to apply pressure and started to scare again in the 18th minute. Attia raised the ball in the area, and Lashin appeared to finish the ball, but the Iranian defense managed to clear the danger.
The teams continued to look for the winning goal. In stoppage time, Khalilzadeh found the net for Iran, but the move was disallowed for offside after a review by the referee.
As a result, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that guaranteed Egypt's qualification to the second phase and left Iran hoping for a place among the best third-placed teams.
