Eduardo Bolsonaro convicted: how the international press reported the STF decision

The decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to sentence former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) to four years and two months in prison had repercussions in the international press.
The First Panel of the STF unanimously condemned Eduardo Bolsonaro for coercion during the process, a crime that occurs when someone tries to intimidate, pressure or interfere in investigations or legal actions.
The accusation is that Eduardo organized retaliations in the United States from the Donald Trump government against Brazil and Brazilian authorities to try to prevent the trial of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL-SP), for an attempted coup d'état - he was eventually convicted in September and is currently serving a sentence under humanitarian house arrest.
"Bolsonaro's youngest son, a former parliamentarian, moved to the United States in 2025, months before the trial that convicted his father of conspiracy to carry out a coup d'état," said the British newspaper Guardian.
"In the US, he has been keen to drum up support, particularly from the Trump administration, for his father."
"In July last year, a Federal Supreme Court judge ordered the freezing of Eduardo Bolsonaro's bank accounts and assets, on the grounds that the money sent by his father was financing his efforts to pressure the Trump administration to avoid punishment for the alleged attempted coup after the 2022 elections."
The Times of London reported: "Jair Bolsonaro's son is convicted of lobbying in the US in connection with the coup trial." NBC News highlighted on its website that Eduardo Bolsonaro's lawyers challenged the verdict, claiming there was not enough evidence to convict him.
"The former congressman has lived in Texas since February 2025," says NBC News.
The Reuters news agency highlighted that "Tuesday's decision makes Eduardo Bolsonaro ineligible to run for public office in Brazil for eight years."
"The Chamber of Deputies had already removed him from office." and his salary as a parliamentarian was cut in December, after he missed more than a third of the deliberative sessions in 2025."
