Economist argues that the transition to the end of 6×1 should be "as long as possible"

This is the assessment of Insper economics professor Sergio Firpo, in an interview with Live CNN this Friday (12). He warned that a hastily implemented reduction may not generate the desired effects.
"There is no point in us wanting to reduce working hours, wanting to reduce the number of days worked, without having carefully thought out how this will be reflected in productivity gains per hour worked", said the professor.
He highlighted that simply reducing working hours will not increase productivity immediately and could increase costs. "This can generate informality in specific sectors of the economy. Informality is unregistered employment, which is the way that small companies, with very small margins, have to survive", explained Firpo.
For the specialist, the solution is to treat each sector and each company differently, taking into account size and region. He advocated that the transition be "as long as possible", so that companies have time to reorganize work, promote training and, in some cases, adopt new technologies.
"The success of this change depends on how we deal with this transition", stated Firpo, reinforcing that an accelerated and disorderly implementation could compromise the expected results.

According to Firpo, the debate about the merits of the proposal has already been overcome. "The merit is established, the deputies and senators are convinced that this proposal should go forward", he stated. The discussion now, according to him, focuses on the details of how the reduction in working hours will be put into practice.

"We have to monitor the progress of this complementary Bill, because this will be decisive for the success of reducing working hours", highlighted Firpo.
When asked about how to build a convergence between workers' demands and the concerns of the productive sector, Firpo was categorical in rejecting payroll tax relief as an intermediate solution.
"I think it could be very bad from a fiscal point of view," he said, adding that "worse fiscal conditions have important impacts on the quality of life of the population as a whole", putting pressure on interest rates and inflation.
