Earthquakes in Venezuela: Satellite images show before and after

Satellite images captured by Vantor revealed damage in several areas of the coastal city of La Guaira, in Venezuela, following two earthquakes that hit the country on Wednesday (24). See the gallery above.

The images showed significant damage to residential buildings and neighborhoods, as well as industrial infrastructure. Some of the images show evidence of fires.

In La Guaira, about 10 miles from the capital Caracas, rescuers and residents sifted through the remains of collapsed structures as desperate families searched for missing loved ones.

The photos show collapsed buildings and severe structural damage in several parts of the city, including hotels, large warehouses and dozens of affected homes.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck an area about 100 miles west of Caracas on Wednesday afternoon, followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, according to the United States Geological Survey.

According to the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, the death toll rose to at least 188, with 1,520 injured and another 200 people possibly trapped under the rubble.
