Earthquakes in Venezuela: NGOs warn of recovery after rescues

As rescue teams continue to sift through the rubble for thousands of missing residents, other relief teams turn their attention to Venezuela's long-term needs after the earthquakes.

"We also need to focus on people who have lost their homes and are going to shelters," Beatriz Ochoa, regional head of advocacy at the Norwegian Refugee Council, told CNN.

After visiting the affected areas this Monday (29), Ochoa said that there is "great support" from neighbors, family and friends, who are bringing hot meals to those in need. However, access to toilets, showers and basic supplies is limited.

She emphasized the need for safer places to sleep, as well as food, water, mattresses, medicines and hygiene items.

"People need privacy too," Ochoa said. "In the coming weeks and months, people need safe and dignified access to water, sanitation facilities, sanitary pads for women and girls, and health care," she continued.

And although schools are being used as emergency shelters, she stressed that this should be temporary, to allow children to return to class and regain a sense of normalcy.
