Earthquakes in Venezuela: Almost 900 foreign rescuers are in the country
Almost 900 international rescuers are already working in Venezuela this Friday (26) to try to locate victims buried by the two earthquakes that devastated areas of Caracas and the country's coast.
Foreign rescue teams and humanitarian aid began landing in the country to reinforce the search for survivors, approximately 48 hours after the tremors.
The first to arrive were professionals from the Dominican Republic. Then, other nations also mobilized human and material resources to support operations.
Mexico announced the sending of 250 professionals, while Spain contributed almost 100 specialists. Brazil has also confirmed its participation, with an Air Force plane expected to arrive in the country.
Large-scale international mobilization
A Colombian team was also on its way to Venezuela. Switzerland and Germany mobilized experts, sniffer dogs and equipment to locate victims.
France, Italy, India, Panama and Ecuador also pledged equipment, supplies and search teams. The United States announced 150 million dollars - around 550 million reais - in humanitarian aid, in addition to sending rescue teams and logistical support.
The North American government itself temporarily suspended part of the sanctions that would normally restrict support for Venezuela, in a move that, according to reporter Alessandra Freitas, reflects the seriousness of the situation by breaking political barriers.
Delci Rodrigues thanked the international support this Friday and informed that the foreign teams have already been distributed among the most affected regions. The next few hours were described as extremely crucial to rescuing as many people alive as possible.
Brazil confirms aid and Lula asks for a minute of silence
At an event held in Santa Catarina, President Lula asked for a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela.
In his speech, he cited the figures of 589 deaths and 2,850 injuries recorded up to that time, and ordered José Múcio to travel to Venezuela the following week to discuss how Brazilian defense could contribute to the Venezuelan people. There are Brazilians already confirmed among the victims of the tragedy.
The expectation, as warned by the journalistic team, is that the total number of deaths could exceed 10 thousand people, given the magnitude of the destruction caused by the earthquakes.
