Durigan defends discussion on adjustments in the composition of inflation
The Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, assesses that changes in the composition of inflation may be welcome, as long as they are well-intentioned. For the head of the economic department, the composition of the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index) shows signs of a lag.
According to Durigan, the weight of the components has changed. He cites, for example, streaming subscriptions and cloud services, which should have a greater weighting in the inflation calculation. The statement was given to Warren Política, on Warren Investimentos' YouTube.
"The composition of inflation itself. There are a lot of people who study it and say that there is a lag. Our model gives weight to things that today don't have the same weight as they did before," he told the podcast.
Although he is in favor of changes, the minister said he is against changing the 2026 inflation target, which is 3%, with a tolerance range of up to 4.5%.
During the interview, Durigan also defended the need to improve cooperation between the government's economic area and the Central Bank to harmonize fiscal and monetary policies.
The IPCA rose 0.58% in May, the highest rate for the month of May in five years. The result caused the index to once again exceed the target ceiling pursued by the Central Bank.
