Images captured by the news newspaper Observator, from the Romanian TV channel Antena 1, show the exact moment of the incident. You can hear the audio of the explosion in the video and, soon after, dense black smoke rising above the water.
Hours later, Ukraine admitted that the equipment was part of its arsenal and explained that it had strayed to the Romanian coast after suffering an electronic attack from Russia during a mission in the Black Sea.
In an official statement on Facebook, the Ukrainian Navy said it had contacted the Romanian government to warn them of the risk and avoid casualties.

In an interview with a Romanian website, the mayor of the county of Constance, Adrian Teodor Picoiu, confirmed that he was notified and that the drone that exploded was part of a group of five.
In a press conference, the deputy minister of the Interior, Raed Arafat, reported that the port, the largest in Romania, was evacuated and the residents were evacuated. European Union member Romania shares a 650km land border with Ukraine and has seen Russian drones repeatedly violate its airspace since Moscow's attack on Kiev four years ago, as well as mines floating in the Black Sea, blocking important trade and energy routes.
Friday's explosion was the second serious incident in a populated area of the country in just one week. Last Friday, May 29, Romania accused Russia of being responsible for a drone attack that hit a residential building in the city of Galati, leaving two injured.
Explosion raises fears in Europe about the war between Russia and Ukraine
Hours after the incident in Galati, a week ago, when questioned during a press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied the accusations. He said he didn't know anything and challenged the neighboring country to hand over the wreckage of the drone to prove that it was launched from Russia.
"No one knows the origin of a drone. Ukrainian drones flew to Poland and the Baltic countries before... I think this happened again. Let them then hand over the wreckage to Russia and we will carry out an investigation", he provoked.

Putin also stated that the accusations that "Russia is preparing for a war with Europe are a lie" and that he cannot give a prediction for the end of the conflict with Ukraine, but that Russian troops are "advancing every day", which could indicate that it is close to the end.
"Russia does not threaten Europe", he stated.
This Thursday (4), the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, accused Europe to "arm themselves to the teeth" and promote conflicts on the continent.
