Dr. Kalil at the National Academy of Medicine: find out interesting facts about the Chair
The cardiologist and presenter of "CNN Sinais Vitais", Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, takes office at the National Academy of Medicine (ANM), one of the most traditional and prestigious scientific institutions in the country, this Friday (22).
Roberto Kalil now occupies Chair number 1 in the Academy's Medicine Section. The position was opened after the death of pulmonologist José Manoel Jansen, who held the position until 2025.
The chair assumed by Kalil carries a special historical weight. The patron is Joaquim Cândido Soares de Meirelles, considered one of the most important names in medicine in Empire Brazil. He was the founder and first president of the then Rio de Janeiro Society of Medicine, the embryo of the current National Academy of Medicine. He is also the Patron of chair 28 of the Brazilian Academy of Military Medicine.
José Manoel Jansen was elected member of the National Academy of Medicine in 1997. He was one of the most relevant names in Brazilian pulmonology, building a career marked by academic, scientific and hospital work. He was a full professor at UERJ and the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), associate professor at UFRJ and coordinator of the Reference Center for Occupational Pulmonary Diseases at Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto, where he also directed the Pulmonology Service.
The National Academy of Medicine aims to maintain the mission of promoting scientific debates, contributing to the development of Brazilian medicine and acting as an advisory body on public health and medical education issues.
Currently, the institution has 100 full members, divided between the sections of Medicine, Surgery and Sciences Applied to Medicine. Chairs are only opened either when a tenured academic dies, or becomes an emeritus member. The choice of new members is made by voting among the academics themselves, in a process marked by the recognition of the scientific and professional trajectory of the candidates
Recognized as one of the country's leading cardiologists, Roberto Kalil Filho built a career linked to research, teaching and medical care. He is currently a full professor of Cardiology at FMUSP, president of the Board of Directors of InCor and general director of the Cardiology Center at Hospital Sírio-Libanês.
