If Brazil and Norway end up tied after 90 minutes this Sunday (5), in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the place in the quarterfinals will not be decided immediately on penalties. FIFA regulations provide for extra time before any penalty shootout.

The extra time is divided into two 15-minute periods, totaling another 30 minutes of play. The teams take a brief break between the two halves, but there is no break like in regulation time.

If one of the teams ends the extra time with an advantage on the scoreboard, they guarantee qualification for the quarter-finals. If equality persists after 120 minutes, the decision will be on penalties.

In addition to extra time, the regulations also grant an extra substitution for each team if the match reaches extra time. This way, coaches can make a sixth change during the extra period.

The winner of Brazil x Norway will face in the quarter-finals whoever advances from the clash between Mexico and England, played on the same day.
