Different calendar: understand which country is already in 2083

Nepal, a nation located in the Himalayan mountain range, between China and India, officially lives in the year 2083. The chronological difference in relation to the Western world occurs due to the use of the Bikram Sambat, a calendar of Hindu origin that is just over 56 years ahead of the Gregorian system.

The method is the main reference for official documents and the organization of Nepalese society.

How the Bikram Sambat calendar works
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is strictly solar, the Bikram Sambat is a lunisolar system. This means it is simultaneously based on the phases of the Moon and the solar seasons.

In Nepal, the months are defined by lunar cycles of 29.5 days, which requires periodic adjustments to maintain synchronization with the seasons.

Nepali New Year usually occurs in mid-April. To facilitate international relations, the country uses the Gregorian calendar only in passports.

Time zone and national identity
In addition to its own calendar, Nepal has an exclusive time zone, Nepal Standard Time. The country is five hours and 45 minutes ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Until 1986, the region followed Indian time, but decided to advance its clock by 15 minutes as a symbolic gesture of independence and national identity.

The country is also the only one in the world to adopt a non-rectangular flag, made up of two triangles that symbolize the Himalayan mountains.
