Deschamps equals Felipão's record and reaches third World Cup semi-final

Last Thursday (9), France beat Morocco 2-0 and secured a place in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. With the qualification, coach Didier Deschamps joined a select list.

Champion as a player, in 1998, and coach, in 2018, Deschamps took the French team to the semi-finals of a World Cup for the third time. The other time was in 2022, in Qatar, when the Europeans lost the decision to Argentina.

The commander of the French team equaled the record of Luiz Felipe Scolari, known as Felipão, and German Helmut Schon. Only the trio have reached three World Cup semi-finals as coaches. On the same day, Deschamps completed his 25th World Cup game, a mark achieved only by the German coach.

Remember the trajectories of Felipão and Schon

Felipão played in two World Cup semi-finals with the Brazilian team, in 2002 and 2014, and one with Portugal, in the 2006 edition. The first ended with Brazil winning its fifth world championship.

The second, which had everything to go down in history as it was played at home, ended up being marked as Amarelinha's biggest embarrassment: the 7-1 defeat against Germany, at Mineirão.

Now deceased, Schon was West Germany's coach in the 1966, 1970 and 1974 campaigns. In the first, he was defeated by England in the final, in London. In the second, they faced Italy and lost 4-3. In '74, Helmut and the West Germans finally finished as champions at home.

In the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, France will face the winner of the game between Spain and Belgium, which takes place this Friday, at 4 pm (Brasília time), in Los Angeles.
