Death toll from earthquakes in Venezuela rises to 3,342; interim president rules out 'social upheaval'

The death toll in the earthquakes that hit Venezuela on June 24 rose to 3,342, according to official figures released this Sunday (5) and cited by France Presse (AFP). The new balance also shows more than 16,700 injuries.

Amid the increase in the number of victims, the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, ruled out the possibility of a "social upheaval" in the country as a result of the tragedy.
"There will be no social upheaval, what exists here is the deep social solidarity of our people", she stated during the Independence Day celebrations, held at Fort Tiuna, a military complex located in Caracas.
Rodríguez temporarily took over as Presidency after the capture of Nicolás Maduro earlier this year, in an operation led by the United States.
Despite the official speech, residents of the regions most affected by the earthquakes reported outrage at the authorities' response. In interviews with AFP, part of the population criticized the government's actions in the devastated areas and demanded greater speed in providing assistance to victims.
On Saturday (4), the Venezuelan Ministry of Communications had reported a death toll of 2,954 and 16,592 injured. The updated data released this Sunday brings the total number of fatalities to 3,342 and the number of injuries to more than 16,700.
