Player Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute to Diogo Jota after Portugal's 2-1 victory over Croatia, this Thursday (2). Jota, who played for the Portuguese national team, died on July 3, 2025 in a car accident in Spain.

The accident occurred in the province of Zamora, in northwest Spain, during the early hours of the morning. Jota was traveling with his brother André, who was also a football player. The two died at the scene.
In a statement, the Spanish Civil Guard reported that the vehicle was traveling along the A-52 highway, in the Sanabria region. While overtaking, one of the tires burst. The car left the track and caught fire.
According to CNN Portugal, the brothers were traveling by car between Portugal and the United Kingdom because Jota had recently undergone lung surgery, and doctors recommended that he avoid traveling by plane.

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva was born in December 1996, in the city of Porto. He started his career at Paços de Ferreira and made his professional debut in 2014, at the age of 17.
He then played for Porto and Wolverhampton until arriving at Liverpool, in 2020, during the pandemic. At the English club, he enjoyed the peak of his career and won an English Championship, an FA Cup and two English League Cups.
Throughout his professional career, he played 447 matches and scored 150 goals. The last one was in April 2025, in a classic against Everton, Liverpool's rival.
A frequent presence in the Portuguese national team's squad, he won the Nations League in June 2025. The final against Spain was decided on penalties after a 2-2 draw - and it ended up being his last match. Jota scored 14 goals in 47 games for Portugal.
The striker got married two weeks before the accident, on June 22, 2025. He left behind his wife and three children, aged 4 years, 2 years and a six-month-old baby.
