Corinthians U22 overcome Liga Sorocabana and guarantee a place in the final of the São Paulo Basketball Cup

Corinthians is qualified for the final of the São Paulo Basketball Cup. Even competing in the state competition with an Under-22 team, Timão guaranteed their presence in the decision after winning the Sorocabana League 75 x 59, last Tuesday night (16), at Ginásio Wlamir Marques.

With the result, Corinthians closed the semi-final series 2 x 1 and confirmed their place to compete for the title of the competition organized by the São Paulo Basketball Federation (FPB). The black and white team will now face Tatuí in the grand final, in a match played in the best of five matches format. The dates and times will still be defined by the entity responsible for the tournament.

Corinthians' campaign until the decision has positive numbers. In 19 games played in the Copa São Paulo, Timão recorded 14 wins and five defeats. In the first phase, the team finished in the overall leadership of the competition, with 13 points won out of 14 possible.

In the second stage of the tournament, Corinthians ended their participation in Group A in second place, behind Basquete Assis. The teams finished tied on points, but the rival had an advantage in terms of baskets, with 135 against 53.

In the knockout stages, the black and white route had two classifications in balanced series. In the quarter-finals, Corinthians eliminated Diadema after winning the match 2 x 1. The same score was repeated in the semi-final against Liga Sorocabana, guaranteeing Timão's presence in the dispute for the trophy.

The opponent in the decision, Tatuí, reaches the final as current champion of the Gold League, a competition equivalent to the second division of Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB). The title also guaranteed the team from the interior of São Paulo access to the national elite for the 2026/27 season.

Focus on base development

Despite being an adult competition, Corinthians chose to use its U22 squad in the Copa São Paulo as part of the preparation for the Basketball Development League (LDB), the main national tournament aimed at youth categories.

The competition will have its first phase played between the 21st and 27th of June. Timão debuts next Sunday (21), at 1:30 pm, against Cruzeiro, at Ginásio Felipe Karam, in Rio Claro, beginning its search for the first title in the club's history in the LDB.

In addition to strengthening younger athletes, participation in competitions is also part of the planning for the next season of Corinthian basketball. The modality is going through a process of internal adjustments and will have a budget reduction of approximately 30% from the next cycle onwards.

With this, the use of players trained or developed by the club gains even more importance for assembling the squad that will compete in the 2026 Campeonato Paulista and the Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) 2026/27.

The professional cast is also undergoing changes. So far, three departures have been confirmed: the North American winger Davaunta Thomas, the also North American Elyjah Clark, who will go to Minas, and the center Kauan Raymundo, who should play for Brasília.

Now, Corinthians turns its attention to the Copa São Paulo decision, seeking to win the title with a group made up mostly of young athletes.
