Corinthians suffers million-dollar conviction in case involving loan from Talles Magno

Corinthians suffered a new defeat behind the scenes. FIFA ordered the São Paulo club to pay US$850,000 to New York City, from the United States, an amount that corresponds to approximately R$4.2 million at the current exchange rate. The charge is related to the renewal of striker Talles Magno's loan, signed last season.

According to information initially released by ge.globo and confirmed by Central do Timão, the dispute began after the North American club claimed that it did not receive the amount expected to extend the player's contract. The agreement established that Corinthians could keep the athlete for longer upon payment of the amount stipulated between the parties.

Initially, Talles Magno arrived at Parque São Jorge in August 2024, through a loan valid until June 2025. The contract also provided for the possibility of extension until December of the same year, as long as the Brazilian team provided financial compensation to New York City.

According to documents analyzed by FIFA, Corinthians formalized in March its interest in exercising the loan renewal clause. At that time, the club was still managed by Augusto Melo. Despite the official statement, the payment stipulated in the contract was not made, a situation that remained unchanged even after Osmar Stabile became president.

During the process, the Corinthians defense maintained that administrative difficulties caused by the change of command and adherence to the debt settlement plan of the National Chamber for Dispute Resolution (CNRD), linked to the CBF, prevented the financial commitment from being honored within the deadline.

The arguments, however, were not enough to reverse the understanding of world football's highest entity. In a decision issued in February and only released now, FIFA recognized the complaint presented by New York City and ordered full payment of the US$850,000.

In addition to the principal amount, Corinthians was ordered to pay annual interest of 15%, starting in August 2025. The punishment also includes a fine of US$90,000 for FIFA itself and the reimbursement of US$21,000 relating to procedural expenses.

Unhappy with the decision, the São Paulo club sent an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the body responsible for analyzing appeals involving international sporting disputes.

If the appeal is not accepted, Corinthians runs the risk of suffering new sanctions in the transfer market. Currently, the club is already facing a restriction resulting from another financial issue, related to the signing of Venezuelan midfielder José Martínez from the Philadelphia Union. The debt, according to the process, is US$1.425 million, a value greater than R$7 million in the current conversion.
