Corinthians combines defensive solidity and low offensive production in the first half of 2026

The first half of 2026 ended with a scenario of contrasts for Corinthians. While the defensive system presented the best numbers in recent years, the offensive performance was below that recorded in recent seasons. The data reflects the black and white campaign until the break for the World Cup, a period in which the team played 37 matches between Campeonato Paulista, Campeonato Brasileiro and Conmebol Libertadores.
Throughout these commitments, Corinthians scored 41 goals and conceded 31. The defensive performance resulted in an average of 0.84 goals conceded per game, the club's best since the 2022 season. On the other hand, the average of 1.11 goals scored per game represents the lowest offensive index in the last five years.

The difference between the sectors helps explain the team's trajectory in the first half of the year. Despite having advanced to the round of 16 of the Libertadores at the top of their group, Corinthians faced difficulties in other competitions. The team was eliminated by Novorizontino in the semi-finals of the Campeonato Paulista and spent much of the Brasileirão near the bottom of the table.
In the defensive aspect, the numbers show progress in relation to recent seasons. Since 2023, Corinthians had ended their years with averages greater than one goal conceded per game. In 2026, the team managed to reduce this rate, supported mainly by its performance in knockout competitions and the consistency shown in part of the continental campaign.
Considering only the first 37 games of each of the last five seasons, the current defensive performance is surpassed only by that recorded in 2022. That year, Corinthians conceded 27 goals in the same number of matches, an average of 0.73 per game. In 2026, 31 goals were conceded, keeping the team among the best defenses in the period analyzed.
On the other hand, offensive production raises a warning signal. The 41 goals scored in 37 games represent the club's lowest average since 2022. In previous seasons, Corinthians surpassed the 50-goal mark in the first 37 matches, achieving rates higher than those recorded this year.
The numbers show that the offensive difficulty was more evident in the Brazilian Championship. In 18 rounds played, the team found the net just 18 times, maintaining an average of one goal per match. In the Libertadores, the performance was better, with eight goals scored in six games. In the Campeonato Paulista, the attack also presented a modest performance compared to recent years.
Corinthians' last match before the break took place on May 30, when they beat Grêmio 3 x 1, in Porto Alegre. The result helped improve the team's offensive numbers and ended the semester on a positive note.
Now, during the interseason period, the technical committee led by Fernando Diniz will have the opportunity to work on adjustments before the return of competitions. The challenge for the second half will be to maintain the defensive consistency presented so far and increase offensive efficiency so that Corinthians can fight for bigger goals in the remaining matches of the season.
