A survey revealed that excessive consumption of processed foods, common among fans on football game days, is associated with a greater risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.

The alarming consumption of beer, soft drinks, snacks and other processed foods can make a big difference to blood pressure when consumed beyond 90 minutes of a football match.

The study published in the European Heart Journal analyzed more than 112,000 volunteers over eight years, identifying that those who consumed greater amounts of non-antioxidant preservatives had a 29% greater risk of hypertension than those who consumed less.

The president of the DHA (Department of Arterial Hypertension) of the SBC (Brazilian Society of Cardiology, Dr. Erika Campana, warns that the problem is not eating occasionally, but rather overeating and recurring consumption.

"The most important thing is balance. Those who are not yet hypertensive also need to take care of their diet to avoid changes in blood pressure throughout their lives. This care should be even greater for those who have a family history of cardiovascular diseases, as these people are more predisposed to developing the disease", explains the doctor.

Erika also explains that the recommendation is not to stop enjoying the games, but rather to choose food more consciously.

"Football games are moments to celebrate, celebrate and bring people together. The heart also participates in this celebration and deserves attention. Taking advantage of the moment responsibly is the best way to continue supporting many championships", emphasizes Dr. Campana.

Options that contribute to reducing the risks to vascular health during matches are alternating alcoholic drinks with doses of water, reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods and including natural food options.
