Colombian senator's car is the target of a rifle attack

The armored vehicle of Colombian senator Alexander López was the target of a rifle attack this Tuesday (19). The information was released by the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who stated that the action was carried out by an armed group linked to drug trafficking, led by "Iván Mordisco" and "Marlon".
For security reasons, the senator had changed cars at the beginning of the journey and moved a little further along the road, not being hit. The vehicle of the mayor of Santander de Quilichao, which had departed from the same point of origin, was also attacked.
According to information published by the president, the attack occurred on the Pan-American Highway, approximately one kilometer away from the place where the same criminal group carried out a previous bomb attack, which resulted in the death of 21 civilians.
Petro publicly questioned the lack of surveillance by the Armed Forces at a point that suffers permanent attacks and demanded that the highway be monitored constant, including response capacity against the use of drones.
Last week, dissent from the extinct FARC guerrilla led by Iván Mordisco announced a truce for the May 31 presidential elections in Colombia.

The country is experiencing its worst crisis of violence in a decade on the eve of the election to succeed President Gustavo Petro, who compares Mordisco to drug lord Pablo Escobar.
The group, called Central General Staff, said in a statement the suspension of offensive military operations between May 20 and June 10 to ensure that the people go to the polls with peace of mind.
The initiative comes after the failure of disarmament negotiations proposed by Petro and after Mordisco's group murdered 21 people in an explosive attack on a highway in April, the worst attack against civilians in two decades. Currently, the government maintains dialogues only with the Gulf Clan and smaller guerrillas.
Violence also affects the electoral dispute. Last August, opposition senator Miguel Uribe was shot dead in Bogotá. Among the current candidates, millionaire lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella gives a speech protected by bulletproof glass after receiving death threats, and opposition senator Paloma Valencia recently had her security reinforced for the same reason.
Both promise a hard line against crime. Left-wing senator Iván Cepeda, favorite in the polls and who defends the continuity of negotiations, is the target of an alleged attack plan, according to information released by Petro.
