A committee of the Chamber of Deputies of Colombia issued this Wednesday (10) an order suspending the order of the country's president, Gustavo Petro. The commission alleges that Petro committed a "serious offense" by "intervening in politics".
It was not yet clear, until the last update of this report, whether the order has legal and immediate effect, but the Colombian press stated that the Legislature must overturn the measure. According to the newspaper "El Tiempo", the measure is unprecedented in Colombia.
The order was signed and issued by the president of Colombia's Legislative Investigation and Prosecution Commission, Gloria Arizabaleta, Petro's political rival. In the document, Arizabaleta determines that Petro must be removed from his duties by June 21, the date on which the second round of the Colombian elections takes place.
Petro supports Iván Cepeda, one of the two candidates who went to the second round. Cepeda will face the ultra-rightist Aberlardo de la Espriella, who finished in 1st place in the first round.
The Colombian president had not yet commented on the suspension order until the last update of this report.
