Colombia seeks to repeat its best World Cup campaign against Switzerland

Colombia faces Switzerland this Tuesday (7), at 5pm (Brasília time), in the last match of the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. In addition to the place in the quarter-finals, the Colombian team seeks to equal its best campaign in the history of the World Cup.

Colombia's best performance in World Cups came in 2014, in Brazil, when the team reached the quarterfinals and finished the competition in fifth place overall. Under the command of coach José Pékerman, the Colombians had a 100% success rate in the group stage.

In that World Cup, the highlight was midfielder James Rodríguez, who finished as the competition's top scorer with six goals.

Before 2014, Colombia's best campaign had been in 1990, in Italy. On that occasion, the generation led by Carlos Valderrama advanced to the round of 16, but ended up being eliminated by Cameroon.

In the current edition, Colombia also achieved an unprecedented milestone: it became the first team to play matches in the same World Cup in three different countries: Mexico, the United States and Canada.
