The AI company Anthropic proposed a global pause in the development of increasingly powerful AI systems, in the face of signs that the latest models could escape human control.
Developer of Claude's AI models, the company, based in San Francisco (USA), highlighted in a report that the global slowdown in the development of cutting-edge AI could be "a good idea", but warned that if just one company slows down the pace, it may simply be overtaken by the competition.

"We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to temporarily slow down or pause AI development, to allow social structures and alignment research to keep pace with advancing technology," Anthropic said. Claude

The proposal faces an uphill battle in Washington and Silicon Valley. American officials and executives at big technology companies argue that slowing AI development could give China a significant advantage.
President Donald Trump, however, this week signed an executive order that will allow the government to make preliminary assessments of American companies' most powerful AI models before their launch.
Anthropic has indicated that it hopes to bring together government officials, scientists, advocacy groups and competing companies in the coming months to define how such a system would work.
The call for coordination comes as internal data shows that AI is accelerating from dramatically shape its own development, highlighted Anthropic.
The company warned that this acceleration would create a feedback loop that could lead to what researchers call "recursive self-improvement," which refers to the idea that an AI system might be able to teach itself to become smarter.
Anthropic denied that this point is inevitable, but stressed that "evidence suggests that the human role is diminishing at each stage of the AI development process."
