Isolated storms, intense rain, gusts of wind and hail affected several regions of Rio Grande do Sul, this Sunday (28). Due to the intensity, municipalities had classes suspended and traffic interrupted.

According to Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology), the state faces rainfall of 50 and 100 mm/day, in addition to winds that can reach 100 km/h. The main regions affected are: Porto Xavier, Santa Rosa, Redentora, Roque Gonzales, Tucundiva, Horizontina, Sede Nova, Coronel Bicaco, Campo Novo and Campina das Missões.

Just this Sunday, families had to leave their homes due to the storms. Cities suffer from electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling trees, flooding and destroyed roads.

Affected municipalities
In Porto Xavier, traffic between the communities of Travessa Linha Baixa and Linha Taquarussu was completely interrupted due to the heavy rains and floods that hit the region. According to the local Civil Defense, the bridge connecting the two addresses was severely damaged.

In the municipality of Campo Novo, classes in the Municipal Education Network were suspended this Monday (29). The city also registered flooding points and bridge closures due to the weather condition.

The City Halls of Redentora and Sede Nova also suspended classes in the municipal education network this Monday (29).

Despite this, in the city of Redentora, Creche Gente Miúda will operate normally. "We understand the needs of families who depend on this space. New updates on the return of other school units will be released throughout the day tomorrow", they informed.

In Roque Gonzales, more than 130 mm of rain was recorded, causing extensive damage to roads and flooding points on bridges and culverts.

CNN Brasil contacted the Rio Grande do Sul Fire Department for more information about the incidents, and is awaiting feedback.

Rains in the South
According to Inmet, this Sunday's rains will continue until the end of the day and affect the other states in the south of Brazil, which remain on "danger" alert.

The main affected areas are Serrana, Oeste Santa Catarina, Vale do Itajaí, Noroeste Rio-grandense, Southwest Paraná, Northeast Rio-grandense, Central-South Paraná, Southeast Paraná and Sul Catarinense.

The institute also reinforces that, in case of gusty winds, the population should not take shelter under trees - as there is a risk of falling and electrical discharges -, and should not park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs.
