Clashes in Sri Lankan prison leave 25 dead and almost 100 injured

At least 25 people were killed and almost 100 injured as violent clashes at a prison in Negombo, Sri Lanka, entered their second day on Monday (6), local media reported, citing police.

The violence began on Sunday (5), when rival groups of inmates clashed inside the prison, leaving two dead and 38 injured. During the disturbances, a group of inmates climbed onto the roof of the unit in protest.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while two inmates in serious condition were transferred to the National Hospital in Colombo.

The clashes resumed this Monday, raising the death toll to at least 25 and leaving dozens of others injured, according to local press reports.

Prison authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the clashes.
