The Civil Defense warns that the winter in São Paulo will be influenced by the El Niño phenomenon, predicted to be one of the most intense ever recorded. Although the beginning of the season is marked by dry weather and cold air masses, the tendency is for humidity and rain to increase in the coming months.

According to the agency, the phenomenon should appear gradually, mainly between the months of August and September, with greater occurrences of frontal systems and air humidity. Even with this forecast, accumulated rainfall volumes are expected to remain close to the historical average for the period.

The regions most influenced by El Niño will be the south and east of the state, including the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, the Ribeira Valley and areas close to the border with Paraná.

According to the Civil Defense, throughout the winter, temperatures should remain close to the historical average in most parts of São Paulo. Even so, the forecast indicates a greater frequency of hot days for the period, especially in the interior of São Paulo, where afternoons can record high temperatures and low levels of relative humidity.

On the other hand, the season will continue to be marked by the action of polar air masses. Between July and August, incursions of cold air capable of causing sharp drops in temperature are expected, with the possibility of frost in more susceptible areas of the southern and eastern regions of the state.

According to Civil Defense, episodes of intense cold must occur punctually, without the persistence of long consecutive periods of low temperatures.

Prevention
Civil Defense highlights the need for attention to the impacts of cold and the effects of low air humidity, especially among children, the elderly, people in vulnerable situations and domestic animals. During this period, the alert also extends to the possibility of climate-triggered forest fires.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Adriano Baruffaldi, Director of Civil Defense, the agency has been reinforcing the preparation of municipalities, investing in technology, monitoring, training and equipment through Operation SP Without Fire.

"We are beginning a period that will require attention to both the impacts of the cold and the risks associated with low air humidity and forest fires. The population also plays a fundamental role in this process, following Civil Defense warnings and adopting preventive actions that help protect lives, the environment and property", he stated.

Civil Defense guides the monitoring of meteorological alerts issued by the agency's official channels. Furthermore, in cases of emergency, assistance can be requested by calling 199 or by the Fire Department, on phone 193.

In addition, it is also possible to receive free alerts via SMS by sending the location's zip code to the number 40199.
