City of SC records -7.3ºC, one of the lowest temperatures in the country in 2026

The city of Bom Jardim da Serra recorded, on the morning of this Thursday (18), the lowest temperature of the year. At 7am, the thermometers in the Santa Catarina mountains registered -7.3°C.

For the second day in a row, the landscapes dawned covered in frost, and several streets were icy.

The intense cold and frost are caused by a mass of polar air that advances through the southern region. This cold front is expected to remain strong until the end of the week.

In addition to Bom Jardim, 13 other cities in Santa Catarina recorded negative temperatures this morning.

Weather forecast for the next few days
An intense mass of polar air is advancing across Brazil and is expected to cause a drop in temperatures in the southern states of the country. As a result, the last week of autumn 2026 should be marked by intense cold, frost and temperatures below 0°C.

The cold should be felt even more strongly between Saturday (20) and Sunday (21). The new phenomenon could bring widespread frost to the southern states.

On Sunday (21), the winter of 2026 officially begins under the impact of a polar air mass that is expected to cause the first major cold wave of the season.

According to the WMO (World Meteorological Organization), the phenomenon is characterized by a sudden drop in air temperature near the surface, resulting in extremely low values that persist for at least two days.
