The City Hall of Bom Jesus da Penha, in the interior of Minas Gerais, temporarily suspended classes in the city's municipal education network for seven days, starting on Friday (22), following a series of Influenza cases registered in the region in just one week.

According to the decree, established in conjunction with the Municipal Epidemiological Surveillance, the Regional Health Department and the Municipal Department of Education, the determination follows the guidelines of the health authorities, adopting preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus.

The measure highlights the need to preserve the health of children, adolescents, education professionals and other employees of the municipal education network, considering

the high circulation and crowding of people in schools, which can favor the spread of respiratory diseases.

During the suspension, the Municipal Department of Education must adopt the necessary measures to carry out remote teaching, with activities passed on to students, ensuring compliance with the minimum annual workload.

The suspension may be prolonged or revised, depending on the evolution of the epidemiological scenario and the assessment of health authorities.

According to the city hall, between May 15th and 22nd, 29 positive cases of Influenza were confirmed in the municipality. All registered cases are considered mild, with no records of serious diagnoses.

Among the people who tested positive are 13 children up to five years old, 4 children aged 6 to 14 years old and 12 teenagers over 15 years old.

Recommendations from authorities
The Municipal Health Department informed that family members and people who live with patients who tested positive should consider themselves potentially infected and avoid spreading the virus.

The main groups considered at risk for complications caused by Influenza are children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and the elderly.

The city hall's recommendations to prevent spread are:

- Avoid crowds
- Avoid frequenting places with large numbers of people
- Seek care if you have flu-like symptoms and wear a mask
- Wear a mask in closed environments or when you have symptoms
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol gel
