Cillian Murphy and the decision that changed his career: why he refused to become a rocker

Cillian Murphy, currently recognized as one of Hollywood's most respected actors and an Oscar winner, almost followed a completely different path before becoming a movie star. Before his consecration on the big screen, Murphy was deeply involved in music, even leading a band inspired by the iconic Frank Zappa. However, a crucial decision took him away from his musical career and directed him towards theater and, later, cinema. In the 1990s, in Ireland, Murphy sang and played guitar in several bands, most notably The Sons of Mr Green Genes, a group that received an offer to record five albums. The band, known for its irreverent lyrics and endless guitar solos, seemed to be the young musician's promising future. However, the offer was refused. One of the members was still at school and Murphy considered the amount offered by the record company insufficient, especially to give up the rights to the songs he composed himself. What really sparked his interest was the local theater, especially after seeing a production inspired by Stanley Kubrick's film "A Clockwork Orange." After years of acting in plays across Europe, Murphy made his film debut in 2001 and, in 2002, won the lead role in the revolutionary zombie film "28 Days Later", directed by Danny Boyle. Since then, his career has continued to grow, consolidating himself as one of the most important names in contemporary cinema. Despite his musical talent, Murphy has no regrets about putting music aside. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, he stated that, even if he was good at what he did, the idea of being an actor with a rock band on the side would prevent him from being taken seriously in acting. This decision, therefore, was essential for him to be able to fully focus on his acting career and achieve the success he has today. Currently, Murphy returns to the horror franchise "A Quiet Place" in the third film in the series, playing the character Emmett again. Furthermore, rumors indicate his return to the franchise that launched him to stardom, with the production of "28 Years Later: Part III". He also appeared, uncredited, in this year's spin-off, "The Bone Temple," and is involved in a new, as-yet-untitled film directed by Damien Chazelle, known for hits like "La La Land" and "Whiplash," alongside Daniel Craig and Michelle Williams. Interestingly, Murphy will not be in Christopher Nolan's next epic, "The Odyssey", despite the successful partnership between the two, which reached its peak with the film "Oppenheimer" in 2023, in which Murphy won the Oscar and Golden Globe for the lead role. The actor revealed that he is even relieved not to participate in the film, as he will be able to watch the film calmly in cinemas. This trajectory shows how a single decision can completely transform the course of a person's life. By choosing to abandon music to dedicate himself to theater and then cinema, Cillian Murphy not only changed his destiny, but also contributed to the cinematic universe with memorable and award-winning performances.
